Review

Different Moods could be subtitled The Versatility of Sugar Aloes. It has social commentary calypso that is sensitive and local - Nobody Loves Nobody; and observant and global - Signs of the Times. Political commentary is clear in Man to Manning. A signature tune of sorts, Love Being Me, is a declarative statement that is prideful without conceit. Jam Me and Fete are the soca tunes with Fete having become an anthem in its own right. You don't need any other instructions to party; you don't have to raise your hand or anything to enjoy this song.

I am thankful that Different Moods was re-released in the year Sugar Aloes ascended the Calypso monarch throne. The CD better represents the artistry of the man: he is articulate, the melodies are sweet, his voice is soft and harmonious with the horn accompaniment, all blending to make, perhaps, his best recording.
